HISTORY :

Kumarakom- Haven of Serenity,Kerala is a minor destination comprised of a collection of small islands in the state of Kerala. Before its popularity as a tourist town, Kumarakom was an area located near a marshy mangrove on the edge of the Vembanad lake. 


In 1878, George Alfred Baker, a missionary from Essex, England, set about clearing the mangrove and replacing it with coconut plantations. Baker was so taken aback by the beauty of Kumarakom- Haven of Serenity,Kerala that he decided to make it his home and in doing so he became the catalyst for development in the area.

1)Kumarakom bird Sanctuary

 A 14-acre bird sanctuary, is situated on the eastern banks of Vembanand river.
 An avian place comprising different kinds of birds like herons, egrets, darters, teals, waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, water duck and the migratory Siberian cranes.



2)Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls

Location :  just 2 kms from Kumarakom


This is believed to be a very beautiful and enjoyable spot . Make a trip to these waterfalls to mingle with nature at its best.

3)Pathiramanal

An island on backwaters making a wonderful homage to the migratory birds coming from various parts of the world. Surrounded by Vembanad river, this place is only accessible by boat.

4)Vaikom

Location : Situated 40 kms from Kottayam.

Vaikom this place is well-known for housing Shiva temple. The temple is extremely popular for its traditional art performance and an elephant pageant.
